Reason for the crematory manager licensing exam:
California law requires each candidate for licensure
as a crematory manager to pass an examination.
The primary purpose of the examination is to help insure public
health and safety by assessing the candadate's ability to apply
California health and safety laws, as well as other relevant laws and
regulations, to the major duty areas of crematory manager practice.
Each of the several 90-minute 75-question crematory
manager examination versions covers four major duty areas
that define the scope of knowledge
necessary
for safe and
effective practice.
Each of the major duty areas are weighted on
the
examination in terms of its importance in practice:
IDENTIFICATION AND PREPARATION (30%),
CREMATION PROCESS (48%),
ADMINISTRATION AND TRAINING (30%), and
RELEASE AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES (6%).
I. Identification and Preparation (30%): This area assesses the candidate’s ability to verify identification of the deceased and
review required
documentation in addition to preparing the cremation chamber prior to performing the cremation process.
SECRET: 18 of this 30% is 'Receiving remains for cremation', and 12 of this 30% is "Initial Procedures'.
II. Cremation Process (48%): This content area assesses the candidate’s ability to perform the cremation process by documenting procdures,
operating the crematory, monitoring cremation process, processing cremated remains, and prepaing facility for the next cremation.
SECRET: 16 of this 48% is "Cremation", 10 of this 48% is "Processing", and 8 of this 48% is "Packaging".
III. Administration and Training (30%): This content area assesses the candidate’s ability to
perform required administrative duties including the training and supervision of crematory operators.
IV.Release and Disposal Procedures (6%): This content area assesses the candidate’s ability to store
and release cremated remains, and dispose of residue following cremation in accordance with law.
The examination outlines identify the knowledge required to
demonstrate acceptable competence in each of the major content
areas.
